Get the skills
Where the refac skill lives on GitHub, and which folder each agent tool reads skills from.
This page takes you to the refac skill and gets your agent to inshallah find it.
Where it is
The skill is part of the refac repository, which is public on GitHub: jav-ed/ai_refac. The folder is .agents/skills/refac-cli. It is one skill: SKILL.md, and a references/ folder next to it. It follows the open Agent Skills format, so any tool that supports that format can use it.
Which folder your agent reads
Every tool has its own skills folder, one per project and one for all your projects. This is what each tool documents (checked on 2026-10-19):
| Tool | Project folder | Your user folder |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Code | .claude/skills/ | ~/.claude/skills/ |
| Codex | .agents/skills/ | ~/.agents/skills/ |
| Gemini CLI | .gemini/skills/ or .agents/skills/ | ~/.gemini/skills/ or ~/.agents/skills/ |
| Cursor | .cursor/skills/ or .agents/skills/ | ~/.cursor/skills/ or ~/.agents/skills/ |
| VS Code with GitHub Copilot | .github/skills/, .claude/skills/ or .agents/skills/ | ~/.copilot/skills/, ~/.claude/skills/ or ~/.agents/skills/ |
| OpenCode | .opencode/skills/, .claude/skills/ or .agents/skills/ | ~/.config/opencode/skills/, ~/.claude/skills/ or ~/.agents/skills/ |
| Kilo Code | .kilo/skills/ or .agents/skills/ | ~/.kilo/skills/ or ~/.agents/skills/ |
| Roo Code | .roo/skills/ or .agents/skills/ | ~/.roo/skills/ or ~/.agents/skills/ |
The short version: .agents/skills/ works for every tool in the table except Claude Code, which reads .claude/skills/. So put the skill in .agents/skills/ and link it from .claude/skills/ as well. A tool that is not in the table has its own page in the client list at agentskills.io.
If you built refac from source
The skill is already in your checkout. Link it into both folders, so that every git pull updates it. Replace /path/to/ai_refac with your checkout. Claude Code and Codex both document that they follow links to skill folders.
# one project: run it in the project's root
mkdir -p .agents/skills .claude/skills
ln -s /path/to/ai_refac/.agents/skills/refac-cli .agents/skills/refac-cli
ln -s ../../.agents/skills/refac-cli .claude/skills/refac-cli
# every project of your user
mkdir -p ~/.agents/skills ~/.claude/skills
ln -s /path/to/ai_refac/.agents/skills/refac-cli ~/.agents/skills/refac-cli
ln -s ~/.agents/skills/refac-cli ~/.claude/skills/refac-cliIf you use one tool only, create only its folder from the table.
If you only want the skill
Fetch the one folder instead of the whole repository. This takes a few hundred KB:
git clone --depth 1 --filter=blob:none --sparse https://github.com/jav-ed/ai_refac.git refac-skill
cd refac-skill
git sparse-checkout set .agents/skills/refac-cli
mkdir -p ~/.agents/skills ~/.claude/skills
cp -r .agents/skills/refac-cli ~/.agents/skills/
cp -r .agents/skills/refac-cli ~/.claude/skills/Copy it into the project's .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/ instead to give it to one project only. The refac binary is a separate download: see Installation.
Check that it works
Open your agent in a project and ask it to move a file with refac, as a dry run first. It should inshallah run refac move --dry-run and show you the paths and the edits it plans before anything is written. The command is on the Usage page.
Keep it current
The skill describes the commands of the commit it comes from, so update the skill and the binary together. With a checkout, git pull and scripts/install.sh do both, and a linked skill follows the pull. With the one-folder clone, run git pull inside refac-skill and copy the folder again.
